Valldemossa, the jewel of the Tramuntana, closes in winter

Two years after the start of the crisis derived from the health situation, the photograph that can be taken of the Majorcan town is very different. According to data provided by the Valldemossa Town Hall, in 2019 all the premises in the municipality were occupied and there were no sales or rental movements. In 2020, with the restrictions and limitation on tourism, rental signs began to appear. The bolt came and its consequences are still continuing. This past 2021, two premises were rented that were left empty in 2020, although five more premises still remain empty.

The drop in commercial activity is the result of the decline in tourism during the low season, which has been reduced by almost half compared to pre-pandemic figures. During the summer months the influx of tourists was maintained, very similar to that of 2019, but with the arrival of the cold came the closure of premises. During the months of November and December 2019, a total of 4,531 people passed through the municipality's tourist office, while in the same period of 2021 only 2,537 visitors did so.

The figures are insufficient to prevent the closure of businesses in a town where its economic engine is tourism. "We hope that 2022 will be a year more similar to 2019," they say from the council of tourism of the consistory. It should be remembered that the daily tourist pressure index in the municipality of Serra reached 154 tourists per 100 inhabitants in the summer before the pandemic, a figure "well above" any of the tourist destinations in Spain, according to a report made by Exceltur.

Valldemossa, la joya de la Tramuntana, echa el cierre en invierno

The increase in premises for rent is reflected in the main real estate portals. In Idealista there are five offers for renting commercial premises, all of them destined for tourist activities such as clothing stores or souvenirs and souvenirs. Leasing prices range from 1,200 euros per month, the cheapest; up to 2,300 euros, the most expensive, a place on the main street of about fifty square meters. In the online real estate portal does not appear any premises for sale.

La Cartoixa de Valldemossa, the main tourist and cultural attraction of the municipality, is also closed during these months. Although it opened its doors last summer, with the arrival of the low season they closed again. In recent years, the economic crisis and the change of criteria of some tour operators made it reach a point where a renovation was necessary more than ever, which was launched this past summer with cultural events.

Despite the fact that the drop in visitors is generalized, the tourist information office does register more influx on weekends, especially local and some national visitors. The merchants who keep their businesses open in the winter months try to survive with the Majorcans who come to stroll through its streets and enjoy a snack or a coffee. The sight is set on the next season, which they hope will start at the end of March with the cyclists who make the classic route through the Serra, passing through Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and continuing towards Escorca and Pollença.
