Furry Von Purry: Solidarity and original jewels to help the stray cats of Galicia

Furry Von Purry is a charitable jewelery brand born from the love of its promoter, Nuria Otero Queijas, for cats. This veterinarian who works at the 4 de Octubre Veterinary Hospital in A Coruña also has a hobby of making "unique costume jewelry", so joining her two passions in a project that fights for the well-being of street felines came about natural.

Otero began to make different pieces in her free time and when she had a wide range, she decided to open a profile on Facebook and, later, another on Instagram and even a website to sell her creations. The marketing of these carefully designed earrings, necklaces and bracelets, however, is special: a percentage of sales is donated to a Galician association that cares for stray cats.

Precisely, the brand is called Furry Von Purry in honor of a cat that Otero rescued from the street years ago. Furry Purry had been run over and took refuge in a garage, where she was picked up and later taken to the vet where they fought to save her life. The person in charge of this jewelry store took care of this blind cat and finally became her adopter, giving her a home along with the other felines that she had previously adopted. The cat is currently "the CEO of the brand" and she tells in first person the importance of helping other cats in a delicate situation.

Own designs and with feline motifs

Furry Von Purry has had an online store since September 2021, but Otero has been working on the jewelry that she currently sells for two and a half years. “It is a hobby that went further and that gives me some small benefits, but I give them up. I started selling to friends, who talked to friends, and then some stores called me. As I am self-employed, I registered with the IAE”, explains the young woman.

Otero buys the pieces with which he makes his costume jewelery both from online wholesalers and in small shops in A Coruña. The music and the tranquility of his office create the perfect environment to unleash creativity and develop different options for all tastes. The person in charge of Furry Von Purry "refines" the designs that he produces based on practicing and knowing better what her clients are looking for, perfecting her proposals as if they were for her and creating unique and original pieces.

"Furry Von Purry is meant to help cats and I always try to have earrings, bracelets or chokers that have feline motifs," explains Otero. Thus, the jewels of this brand from Coruña can be divided into two lines: those that have cat elements and those that do not. But not only that, since the person in charge of it also accepts orders and personalizes the pieces according to the demand of her clients, who can contact her through Instagram or email.

"The ones I sell the most, especially at Christmas, are the ones with a kitten pendant made of gold-plated steel or resin, which are the ones I also use for fundraising campaigns," explains Otero, who makes small runs except in the case of the most demanded. And it is that the Furry Von Purry collections are special not only because of their purpose, but also because it is difficult to find another person who wears the same model.

a solidarity project

Furry Von Purry is a brand that goes beyond the beauty of the designs it proposes. From the beginning, Otero was clear about the character of solidarity that he wanted to reflect in his jewelry, which is why part of the money that he collects from the sale of the jewelry is given to different Galician protectors. «Because of my work, every day you see abandoned dogs or cats. In fact, all the ones I have at home are adopted. I found Furry Purry run over, she is a kitten with many limitations », indicates Otero about the harsh reality of too many pets that end up on the street, without a home.

The person in charge of Furry Von Purry has managed to combine solidarity with her love for cats and her passion for costume jewelery in a project that is growing little by little. The campaigns of about a month that she launches every Christmas, through which she donates all the proceeds to a charity, are a success and she combines them with the donation of jewels to solidarity markets.

Otero's work is not only important for the amount of money he collects for the protectors, but also for the visibility he tries to give them through various initiatives. “It is a way for people to know that these associations exist and that they need funds. I think it is easier for someone who is not very sensitive to the subject to decide to buy earrings than to make a cash donation, "explains the person in charge of the brand.

Otero currently collaborates with the Abeiro Association of Santiago de Compostela, to which he gave 300 euros thanks to his latest campaign, and has already helped Felinos Felices de A Coruña with his initiative. “It is a project that is especially satisfying for me because it started as a silly thing to sell among veterinary friends to have an online store and three local ones,” explains the young woman.

"For me it is very important, and for Furry Purry too, that it helps their colleagues on the street," jokes the manager of Furry Von Purry, who has turned a hobby into a unique opportunity to collaborate with the cats that need it most.
