Increase lipstick sales by 80%
New York (CNN) -- the pandemic kept its lips out of sight because of the use of masks and isolation orders. That, therefore, adversely affected the sales of lipstick in 2020.
But makeup vendors claim that the fate of this cosmetic commodity is beginning to change as more people get vaccinated and the pace of social interactions accelerates.
According to the latest figures from the IRI market survey company, which tracks sales point data at shops, lipstick sales reached US $34.2 million in the four weeks ending April 18, 80% more than in the same period last year. However, they did not reach pre-pandemic levels, which exceeded US $40 million.
Walmart, the country's largest retail chain, told CNN Business in an email that lipstick is the most performing product in all cosmetic segments, and that lipstick sales stood out in its last quarter ending April 30.
The retailer said buyers were showing a strong preference for long-lasting, stain-proof lipsticks that are not erased so easily under a mask. More recently, Walmart said customers are choosing bright colors such as purple or blue, as well as fashionable brown, in what he called a "opportunity for customers to express once again their uniqueness."

The cosmetics company Estee Lauder foresees a resurgence of lipstick and flashy colors for the summer of 2021.
The recent change in the mask guide could benefit companies.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said last week that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear masks or practice physical distancing in closed or open places except when they are in health, public transport, schools, or other areas where governments require the use of masks.
A large cosmetics company foresees a resurgence in the use of makeup.
"we've been preparing for this makeup renaissance for the last six months," said Sam Cheow, global director of makeup innovation, portfolio and product development at the Estée Lauder companies. Cheow said he hopes to see vivid tones like orange, bright roses, Magenta and purple on his lips facing summer.
And since not all lipstick are the same, Cheow says the texture that has most resurfaced is the "satin". "Satin lipsticks are booming now," he said, referring to pencils with dense tones, high coverage and a little shine.
"as places continue to open and come out, lipstick is like instant gratification, a stimulus we haven't had in the last 12 months and we miss," he said.
