Why powder foundations are the new obsession for a second-skin effect

When it seemed that we had already tried all the makeup bases ever, a category bursts in, not really new, but that is gaining many followers lately. The one with the powder makeup bases. In compact format, loose powder or even complete palettes, more and more brands are venturing to launch their own version, something that beauty junkies have been -or have been- avidly launching into. Now, it is necessary to warn that, for the most part, they are not suitable for those looking for high coverage, since their main characteristic -for which many are choosing them instead of the fluid ones-, is their natural second-skin effect finish. .

Why switch to powder foundations? If you have oily skin, the answer to this question is more obvious. In fact, when we asked the make-up artist M. Ángeles Cabrera about the best option for this type of face during the hot months, she confirmed that this kind of foundations “are usually products designed and formulated for oily skin, keeping the skin more or less matte”. A great advantage for that large percentage of people who are always trying to control -with regular success- unwanted shine and excess sebum that accumulates during the day, but which, as the expert indicated, "can be interesting for everyone type of skins during the summer”. And once the summer season is over? Undoubtedly, oily skin will continue to benefit from this mattifying effect, while dry skin also has good news, as there are already formulas suitable for all skin types. This is the case, for example, of a fairly recent launch, the Perfect Tint Powder from IS Clinical, halfway between a foundation and a powdered sunscreen, which, according to Aura Serras, the firm's director for Spain, "is suitable for all skin types, although it is true that, for those with oily skin, this format may seem more comfortable, because there is nothing sticky left, it controls shine and gives a mattifying effect”.

And, in any case, although it may seem that this type of foundation can be drier due to its format, the truth is that applying a good primer beforehand, it adapts very well to all skin types. But this is not the only advantage they offer over traditional liquid foundations. These are some of its benefits:

  1. They unify the tone without overloading the skin. Yes, the function of unifying and hiding imperfections is one of the main requests we make to a makeup base, but the advantage of powder formats is that they do so without leaving a heavy appearance, but rather give a very light coverage of second skin effect
  2. They are non-make-up effect. This second statement follows from the previous statement: given their lightness, they provide that desired good-looking effect, but without it being noticeable that you are wearing makeup.
  3. They are easier to apply. Many already come with their own applicator sponge or loose brush, but you can use any type of tool you prefer. The great advantage is that they spread very easily and it is very difficult to end up with an uneven result (or stains).
  4. They can be applied only in strategic areas. A classic makeup artist trick is to apply foundation only to the areas of the face that need it. Normally, it is usually on the wings of the nose, chin or cheeks, although this will also depend on where your skin shows redness or any imperfections. But the good thing about this little secret is that, in this way, a much more natural and light result is achieved, with the addition that the powder foundation blends with the rest of the skin in a much more discreet way.
  5. It's easier to tinker. First, because its format usually allows you to carry the foundation in your bag without problems (and the applicator, either brush or sponge, is usually included in the packaging). And second, because its natural finish allows shine to be retouched or camouflaged if necessary, without the need to touch the rest of the face.
  6. They usually contain sun protection. Although it is not widespread, a large percentage of powder foundations usually include more or less SPF (and also mineral type). Of course, remember that since you are not going to use a lot of makeup, it is best to apply the cream sunscreen at home and use these powder versions to reapply this sunscreen during the day.

That said, it's no wonder more brands have jumped into creating their own powder foundations. This is the case of Fenty Beauty, which released its version this year; the Spanish brand Cocunat, which a few months ago presented a new palette of face basics that includes this type of foundation; or Kiko Milano, who also included this kind of foundation in his Dolce Diva summer collection. Other firms have been using this type of product for longer, such as Chanel, which has different types of compacts depending on the finish you are looking for; or BareMinerals, which has a famous tinted loose powder. Here are some winning bets.
