For this reason, we want to explain to you now when makeup and beauty products expire or how we can see the expiration date on the packaging.

When do makeup and beauty products expire?

The health of the skin depends not only on using products that are suitable, but also on checking that they have not expired. In this way, it is important to see if the base that we want to put on may already have been open for a long time or if perhaps the moisturizer that we are going to use may no longer be in its best condition.

You may have had a favorite makeup product for a long time and you use it very little so as not to waste it, but the truth is that if you leave it unused for a long time it is possible that after months and months in your makeup drawer it has already arrived to its expiration date, but what is this date?

For a first orientation, it will be enough to see the consistency of the product if, for example, you notice that it has become very liquid or watery, if it has lost color or even if it smells bad. In case you do not observe anything strange but have doubts, you can resort to the dates that we offer you below:

-Soaps: up to 1 year. Cleansers generally last up to a year, but if you use them every day, they're unlikely to last that long anyway so they're usually not a problem. Micellar water, on the other hand, is an exception and should be used within six months of use because water-based formulas can harbor germs.

-Eye serum: up to 1 year. Most eye creams or serums last up to a year, but those without preservatives can only last six months. Always throw away the product if it has had eye irritation.

-Facial creams: up to 1 year. Face creams and serums last 12 months, but natural, organic, and preservative-free products have a shorter shelf life. Check the expiration date on the open bottle symbol and store the products in a cool, dark place.

-Make-up bases: up to 1 year, but if they have natural components or are organic, they may only last six months. We must pay close attention to the duration of the container, represented by a small jar with a number. In this way, if a 12 appears in the drawing, for example, it will indicate that it will last 12 months.

-Mascara and eye shadows: up to 1 year but always making sure that we store these products in a cool and dark place so that they do not catch air and in the case of shadows, they do not get dusty.

-Lip balm: up to 1 year. SPF lip balms tend to lose their effectiveness after a year.

-Sun protection: check the date. Once opened, it is better to use it in the season and choose a new one when the seasons change. Using it expired is not harmful to the skin, but the filter will lose its effectiveness.

-Perfumes: 3-5 years. The perfumes last three to five years, longer if they are not opened. Heat and light are the enemies, so keep them in a cool, dark place.

What can happen to your face if you use expired makeup?

Now that we know that the "half-life" of any makeup product is more or less one year, you may then realize that you are using products that are already expired, so what can happen to your skin? ?.

In the case that they are creams, serums or the sun protection factor, the most normal thing is that the ingredients of the effect of the product in question will no longer be such, so that if for example you use an "anti-aging" cream » it is possible that it will not serve you for any of that even to hydrate.

With makeup, on the other hand, we must be more careful since normally its components can cause a reaction in our skin once they expire. In fact, the broken molecules of makeup, especially in foundations or concealers, can cause your skin to break out, suddenly feel red, and in more serious cases, you may look full of pimples that, luckily, will disappear as soon as you stop. to use the expired product in question.
