The harsh story of a Honduran mother: She was deported 4 days after giving birth

UNITED STATES. Madeline Banegas Bonilla, a 19-year-old Honduran mother, suffered the desperate situation of being deported four days after giving birth to her baby in a hospital in Eagle Pass, Texas. El duro relato de una madre hondureña: La deportaron 4 días después de dar a luz

This mother was deported on July 4 at 11:00 am, four days after giving birth. Madeline was escorted with her baby into the United States by the Border Patrol and was deported to Mexico.

"They didn't let me take my baby's diaper bag and food, they just left me on the Piedras Negras side," she told Telemundo.

As Border Patrol members took Madeline away, hospital employees advised him to take her medical bracelets as proof of having been there.

“I was not going to be able to get a birth certificate because of the 4th of July holiday. At the hospital they only gave me the certificate that Noah was born there, ”said Madeline.

“When I was at the border crossing, several people who were being deported helped me. A local person gave me a stroller because they saw me having difficulties carrying my baby.”

Banegas left her native Honduras in April, for several weeks she walked or found transportation to reach the border. A family helped her while she was in Piedras Negras. However, on July 2, she decided to take a risk and cross the river to reach the United States.

“When I was going through, I got stuck in a mud bank and couldn't get out. The Border Patrol agents took me out, but I started with stomach pains and they took me to the hospital, that's when my son was born,” says Madeline.

A call of goodwill

A friend of Madeline's in Atlanta said she was unaware she was in the US until she called from the hospital asking for help. After learning of the fate of her friend, she contacted Telemundo Atlanta, and Luis Estrada sent an email to the South Texas Border Patrol office. However, they were unable to obtain information as they declined to discuss the case due to federal policy.

Later, Telemundo Atlanta contacted the Border Patrol office, where a non-profit attorney said she will help Madeline return to the United States. Also, she mentioned that she would do the process for free. "I need to get in touch with that mother to help her get back," Levy Taylor said.

Days later, the director of customs at the Eagle Pass border crossing, Paul del Rincón, told Telemundo Atlanta that the Border Patrol requested that a message be sent to Madeline to return to the United States. "They told me to call him to ask the mother to come back with her baby... we want her to come back before dark," the official said.

"We do not know where she is going to be transferred at this time, it will depend on the information she provides us," said del Rincón.

“I want to study and pursue a career in the United States,” says Madeline. "I want to get ahead." Madeline awaits news from her attorney in Texas, who is working on her case, to find out what the next step will be for her to follow in this immigration process.
