Queen Letizia: display of diamonds and pearls at the first gala dinner after the pandemic

Yesterday, Tuesday, November 16, on the occasion of the state visit that Italian President Sergio Mattarella made to Spain accompanied by his daughter Laura, the gala dinners returned to the Royal Palace, which were suspended when the pandemic began. In keeping with the importance of the event, Queen Letizia dazzled by taking out the heavy artillery from her royal jewelry box.

Her elegant black evening dress from the Armani line with wide straps, a sweetheart neckline and a flared skirt actually served as a background to enhance the invaluable jewelry worn by Felipe VI's wife. Starting with the tiara, known as the Russian diadem, which was owned by Queen María Cristina, mother of Alfonso XIII and its design is inspired by the kokóshnik, a traditional Russian peasant headdress, hence its name.

Made of platinum, pearls and diamonds in the form of inverted tears, when the sovereign regent died it passed into the hands of Alfonso XIII and he gave it to her daughter-in-law, María de las Mercedes for her wedding to Don Juan. She was worn by her daughter, Pilar, at her wedding with Luis Gómez Acebo and also by her granddaughter, Simoneta, at her wedding with José Miguel Fernández Sastrón.

When Doña María died, she bequeathed it to her children, but King Juan Carlos reached an agreement with her sisters, the Infantas Pilar and Margarita, and gave it to Doña Sofía, who wore it for the first time on an official visit to Norway in 2006. Queen Letizia premiered it three years ago, in 2018, on the occasion of the gala dinner offered to Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Spain

On her neck, the Queen wore the small chaton necklace, belonging to Victoria Eugenia. It was initially part of the large chaton necklace that Alfonso XIII gave to his wife for her wedding, made by the Ansorena firm, supplier of the Royal House. Every time the monarch had to give his wife a gift, he bought her two diamonds that were added to the necklace, which acquired such a dimension that Victoria Eugenia decided to divide it in two, integrating the largest one into the "passing jewels" that it is, by the way, the most valuable piece of the royal jewelery box, and the other smaller one was left as an inheritance to his son Jaime. But his wife, Emanuela Dampierre, mother of the Duke of Cádiz, ended up auctioning it, although it was recovered by Don Juan Carlos and was able to return to the Bourbon jeweller. Yesterday, at the gala dinner, Doña Letizia accompanied him with an impressive matching diamond bracelet.

And as a climax, holding the green and red band to the merit of the Italian Republic that he wore crossed on his chest in attention to his guest, stood out a spectacular brooch formed by a large gray pearl surrounded by diamonds from which another pear-shaped one hangs . It is part of Victoria Eugenia's "pass" lot and was premiered by Doña Letizia in January 2019 on the occasion of Military Easter.
