Mexico City, Sep 2 (EFE).- The Mexican Senate unanimously approved this Thursday a reform to the General Health Law that prohibits the use of animals in tests of cosmetic products.

103 senators participated in the vote, all of whom voted in favor of the reform.

"The decree amending and adding various provisions of the General Health Law is approved in general and in particular," said the president of the Senate, Olga Sánchez Cordero, adding that the opinion is sent to the Federal Executive.

The reform establishes that cosmetic research may not include tests on animals of cosmetic ingredients, finished cosmetic products or their ingredients or their mixture.

Cosmetic products may not be manufactured, imported or marketed when their final formulation is or has been tested on animals, and when they contain ingredients or combinations of these that are or have been tested on animals.

With the decision, Mexico became the first country in North America to ban cosmetic testing on animals, and the 41st country worldwide.

The coordinator in the Senate of the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and one of the promoters of the reform, Ricardo Monrea, described the decision as "historic".

"No one can be against banning companies, manufacturers of beauty items, from using live animals for their experiments and for all beauty items," she stated.

He specified that the modification to the law is very important because it contains "not only the prohibition for the use of live animals, but also contains that in the labeling the articles that are produced and manufactured with the use of animals are prohibited and can be insured by the authority".

He added that commercial establishments that sell items made with animals can also be closed.

Meanwhile, the animal protection organization Humane Society International (HSI) welcomed the Mexican Senate's decision to ban cosmetic testing on animals, noting that "they are cruel, unpopular and unnecessary."

"There is a wide range of established cosmetic ingredients and non-animal methods to assess safety, so there is no excuse for continuing to rely on animal testing for cosmetics or their ingredients," the organization said in a statement. release. EFE
