The 2.0 update of the title for Monster Hunter rise, which is now available, adds new monsters, overlapping armor and more, but players noticed a returning feature that they did not look forward to. These are the 'character Editing coupons', which were first introduced into Monster Hunter World, and which allow you to almost completely customize your character, created again after starting the game, but at an additional cost.

From IGN we asked Capcom to clarify exactly how coupons work: "character editing coupons work in a similar way as they do in Monster Hunter: World," explained a spokesperson. "until now only minor editions of characters (hair, makeup, etc.) were possible and will continue to be available for free. Character editing coupons now allow extended editing of your character (body type, detailed facial features, etc.). The first coupon is free."

After that first free coupon, each new coupon will cost 2.99 euros (with discounts for buying multiple coupons).

Apart from the obvious friction point of blocking the content that is already in the game (you completely design a character when the game begins, and the new editing process does not offer any more options), Monster Hunter adds another complication to the theme with armor designs for male and female characters, which can vary greatly. Many players like to see both sets of designs in their characters created before they commit, and coupons now make experimentation have an additional cost, or the fact that they force you to start a whole new game so you can see it without paying.

Fans have begun to express their frustrations with the system since their announcement. "the editions of characters must be free. End point." wrote skepticalmonique on Reddit. "this is the very definition of creating a problem to sell you the solution. It's ridiculous that they're charging for this."

Sly _ Pika agreed: "Shouldn't you have that as a feature of the game from the start? as if it was a full price game that wasn't completely launched... and they put a microtransaction for such a basic concept?"

Steamy _ guy summed up the problem in a concise manner: "I will gladly pay for the content, not the configuration." That's a very common feeling: many Monster Hunter fans are happy to pay (or ignore) new cosmetics, but basic editing functions are considered a step too far.

The reappearance of the function in a second game after World has some players concerned about the direction that the Monster Hunter saga might take in the future: "there is a 100% [chance] of a future timeline in which MH as a series becomes a [microtransaction] full of m *," said SlakingSWAG, "and senseless defense of mechanics like this and rise's state in the launch will play an important role in that decline."

SadArtemis pointed out that the function may even be counterproductive: "Capcom has been looking for ways to introduce microtransactions into MonHun from World and this is literally the only part I'm against. I didn't like it in World and I Don't like it here, anyway. I would say that by making character editions pay (however cheap it may be), it actually makes me less likely to buy more of other types of microtransactions (cosmetics)."

Now it seems that a trend is emerging. With Monster Hunter more popular than ever, the company seems to be taking advantage of that success to get more money from its biggest fans. It's not quite surprising, but the way it's handled feels badly conceived. We have contacted Capcom to get an answer about players' concerns and future plans regarding microtransactions.
