How to know if a product has been tested on animals

During these days, Spanish society has turned to the case of the Vivotecnia research laboratory, a place where Cruelty Free International brought to light a video where you could see the extreme cruelty received by dozens of animals such as pigs, rabbits, dogs, monkeys , etc.

Many users, after seeing the protests on social networks and the great performance exerted by all those who came to the doors of the laboratory to demand the closure of the activity, have asked themselves the following question: what products are tested on animals? How can I know if a product has been tested on animals or not?

Whether we like it or not, there are many laboratories of companies that distribute cosmetics, food or medicines with tests to prove their safety and improve them. This practice is not only done with volunteers but also used on animals. Luckily, there is more and more global awareness and numerous brands are signing up for "Cruelty free", but how do you know if a product has been tested on animals or not?

animal testing

Many products that are marketed must be tested by law, but others are tested only to improve them. They are usually tested on animals that are easy to handle such as guinea pigs, dogs, cats, chickens or rabbits, as well as those that are also very similar to humans, such as pigs and monkeys.

Cómo saber si un producto se ha testado en animales

The tests that are carried out in the laboratories observe the different reactions in the skin, in the hair, in the organs, in the behavior, etc. Around the world, some 15 million animals a year are subjected to cruel tests to prove the safety of cosmetic products. These figures are only from the cosmetic industry, so the pharmaceutical, food, etc. should be added.

The controversy is served and for a few years this practice has been recognized as animal abuse, which is why the EU began to prohibit it in the cosmetic industry. As Green Ecology tells, in 2009 the law was introduced that made it illegal to experiment with cosmetics on animals throughout the European Union or the sale or import of ingredients for cosmetics that have been tested on animals. Later, in 2013, products that had to be tested for possible toxicity were included.

Even so, there is a 10-year extension until all the necessary changes can be made in the companies, during which tests of this type can continue to be carried out. In addition, brands that demonstrate that they cannot have another reliable system that guarantees the health of the public will be able to continue carrying out these tests. Therefore, although the EU is working on this issue, there is still a lot to do and even more at the global level.

For our part, we can identify the brands that carry out these tests and thus avoid consuming them, opting for cruelty-free products.

Has this product been tested on animals or not?

In different countries, guarantees are offered on products, granting the seal / logo or symbol of "not tested on animals". Below we leave you an image so that you can recognize if a product is cruelty free or not.

On the contrary, if the product does not bear any of these symbols, it is very likely that it has been made with animals, although we must know that there are countries that ask for money in exchange for the seal and many brands choose not to pay it.
