Clean Beauty: What is this skincare trend all about?
By Alfonso Luna Soto
If you still don't know what Clean Beauty refers to, you should take this new trend into account.
It's a fact that having a clean skincare routine can sound a bit repetitive. For the vast majority of us it is obvious that cleanliness should be a fundamental part of personal care. The important thing to highlight here is that we are not referring literally to the meaning of the word, but to the new conceptions that have been given to it within the world of beauty. We anticipate that the clean routine, better known as Clean Beauty, is a trend for the skin that you should not miss if you want to have a healthy complexion and, at the same time, look out for the good of the planet we inhabit.
What is a clean product in personal care?
“We can consider a product as clean when it mainly meets these characteristics: free of ingredients that are toxic to the skin, whether natural or synthetic; care for the environment from its formulas to its packaging, and business awareness, that is, they are products that are good for the skin and also for the planet. Among the toxic ingredients we can find sulfates, petroleum, aluminum, parabens, silicones, alcohols, among others. The important thing is to get formulas based on natural extracts (sustainable) or ingredients that are friendlier to our skin”, comments Ana Lía Vandoni, Biossance global education manager.
What is natural is not always the option
We do not want to be misunderstood, without a doubt when talking about what is natural (from any sense) it will always be well received and an option not to be questioned. But on many occasions, as in the beauty industry, using products of natural origin (flowers, plants, fruits) can cause exploitation, putting them at risk of extinction due to the overproduction of the extract, having a negative effect on the ecosystem. For this reason, natural ingredients will always be welcome in a clean skin care routine if they are produced in a sustainable way, that does not harm or exploit the environment. On the other hand, synthetic ingredients are often a better option, thanks to the fact that they are created in a controlled way, providing the same benefits as those of vegetable origin.
The clean ingredients
The list of ingredients in a clean routine is not easy to define, in our opinion the ingredients that are considered clean are: hyaluronic acid (included in serums and moisturizers), vitamin C (present in serums), acid glycolic (found in toners and exfoliants) and salicylic acid (to control acne), to name a few of the most common.
“The main benefit of these ingredients will indisputably be reflected on our skin, because by stopping using toxic ingredients, both the appearance and the internal part of the skin will improve, and some conditions will be avoided, such as the appearance of allergies, sensitivity and even irritations in the eyes, which damage our skin. The less toxic a beauty product, the friendlier and more acceptable to the skin it will be”, says Ana Lía Vandoni.
Is there a clean routine for the skin?
Maybe you already have the answer. To be honest, the steps to include in a clean skincare routine are the same: cleanse, tone, hydrate, and protect. The change lies in the quality of the product being applied. It will never hurt to read the information included in the purchased packages. Maybe some words are unknown like niacinamide (with multiple benefits on men's skin) but, at least, it will do something to give you an orientation of how clean is the product you are about to use. As a last tip, on the website of the brand of any product you can find more information about its philosophy as a company and the quality of the ingredients it uses in its formulas.
