The curious history of the Baguette, Carrie Bradshaw's favorite bag

Along with Manolo Blahnik shoes, the "Baguette" is one of the most representative accessories of Carrie Bradshaw, the star of Sex and The City and And Just Like That.

And while the character played by Sarah Jessica Parker brought it to cult status, this bag actually has a history that goes way beyond the hit HBO series.

Here we tell you who created, how much it costs and other details of "Baguette", one of Fendi's best-known products.

Who created the 'Baguette' bags?

When talking about this bag, a distinction must be made: with "Baguette" we can refer to both the Fendi bag and this style of bag, very small and apparently "minimalist".

The specialized magazine Vanity Fair reports that Silvia Venturini Fendi was the one who suggested that the Italian brand launch a bag inspired by the shape of French baguettes to be able to carry it easily.

This happened in the 90's where minimalism took over the European catwalks, particularly in the second half of these years.

In competition with Prada's nylon bags, which were enormously popular, the magazine continues, the "Baguette" emerged in 1997, a bag that immediately generated sales records.

The creation of the daughter of the founders of the Italian brand generated waiting lists around Europe, something unusual for the time, according to Vanity Fair.

That same publication claims that more than a million "Baguettes" have been sold since its release. Despite the fact that this bag became synonymous with style and modernity from the beginning, there was a program that helped it become even more popular.

Sex and the City clothing keys

When Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind may be shoes, specifically the "Hangisi" model from Manolo Blahnik; However, another basic garment in this character's closet is the "Baguette".

Vanity Fair once again recalls how the "Baguette" transformed the series and, of course, the Fendi brand itself.

Patricia Field, costume manager for Sex and The City, explained that it wasn't easy for her to borrow a "Baguette" for the show. Although at that time the show was already enjoying enormous popularity and prestige, the brands still did not envision the publicity that lending their clothes to a television program would represent.

"Having the Fendi Baguette was a huge game changer and opened the doors to everything else. [...] It influenced the plot a lot, especially Carrie's habit of spending much more money on clothes than on clothes home," said Sarah Jessica Parker in the book Fendi Baguette.

In fact, as we told you, the "Baguette" already made its appearance in And Just Like That. We saw him in one of the first episodes of the show in a purple sequined version, very representative of Carrie Bradshaw's eccentric style.

What are the characteristics of a 'Baguette' bag?

Initially, Fendi's "Baguette" bags were launched on the market with the brand's insignia: the logo of the double ' F' imagined by Karl Lagarfeld, the former creative director of Fendi, and the Vertigo print, "a logo that repeats and twists in a psychedelic way," according to Vanity Fair.

However, the firm soon dared to offer them in all kinds of versions: in cowhide leather, with sequins, in neon colors, with rhinestones... as we already said, it has been sold in more than a thousand different options.

As with the Hermès Birkin, it is also available in various sizes. However, the impractical and small rectangular size is the darling because it reminds us of a time when fashion decided to take risks without losing the fun touch.

By the way, we wonder if Danna Paola, the new Fendi ambassador, will dare to wear a "Baguette" anytime soon.
